If you have the legs for it, short skirts are great in many ways. They are cooler in the summer, and they can also look quite sexy on the right person. For little girls, they even have some that have shorts underneath. That means that children who aren’t quite used to keeping their legs together won’t be showing the world their underwear. However, there are many times when short just won’t do, and long skirts are necessary. They don’t sound as fun, but if you choose the right ones, they can look amazing.
From this elevation, just on the skirts of the clouds, we could overlook the country, west and south, for a hundred miles. There it was, the State of Maine, which we had seen on the map, but not much like that, immeasurable forest for the sun to shine on, the eastern stuff we hear of in Massachusetts. No clearing, no house. It did not look as if a solitary traveler had cut so much as a walking-stick there.
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
One time when long skirts are a must is when attending a funeral. There are plenty of short skirts in dark colors, but they aren’t exactly appropriate. Instead, find long skirts that reach to or below the knees. This shows respect. There are plenty of times to wear shorter skirts, but this is not one of them. If you skip the long skirts and go for a dress, the same length rules should apply. Though wearing all black is not necessary, the skirt, at least, should be black or navy blue. That way, when you choose a top, you know that the skirt will go with just about anything you choose.
When you want to signify a bit of class, you might want to wear long skirts. Shorter ones are great for going out or even hanging around the house. However, when you go to a gathering for work, you might want to get out your long skirts when choosing an outfit. Shorter skirts can work out okay while at work, but most prefer to wear longer ones to be taken seriously. You might be surprised how much a difference your wardrobe can make when people think about how serious and dedicated you are to your job. If you are showing a lot of leg and a lot of cleavage at work, people aren’t going to take you seriously, even if you are very good at your job.
At length I entered within the skirts of the cloud which seemed forever drifting over the summit, and yet would never be gone.... It reminded me of the creations of the old epic and dramatic poets, of Atlas, Vulcan, the Cyclops, and Prometheus. Such was Caucasus and the rock where Prometheus was bound. Æschylus had no doubt visited such scenery as this. It was vast, Titanic, and such as man never inhabits. Some part of the beholder, even some vital part, seems to escape through the loose grating of his ribs as he ascends. He is more lone than you can imagine. There is less of substantial thought and fair understanding in him than in the plains where men inhabit. His reason is dispersed and shadowy, more thin and subtle, like the air. Vast, Titanic, inhuman Nature has got him at disadvantage, caught him alone, and pilfers him of some of his divine faculty. She does not smile on him as in the plains. She seems to say sternly, Why came ye here before your time? This ground is not prepared for you. Is it not enough that I smile in the valleys?
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
You don’t have to have ankle length long skirts to look good and respectable, but they are great for more formal occasions. A great wardrobe can include all sorts of different lengths of skirts from very short to very long skirts. The trick is to know when to wear different lengths. For skirts that match just about anything, go for neutral or dark colors. This gives you more room to move when mixing and matching the items in your closet for the most possible combinations of great outfits possible.
